Blood-curdling Indian folk horror in stunning black and white, based on the mythology of Kerala.
When court singer Thevan flees the clutches of Portuguese slave traders, he stumbles across a mysterious mansion in the Indian jungle, home to Brahmin lord Kodumon Potti. Slowly but surely, Thevan starts to realise that nothing is as it seems in the spooky corridors of this dilapidated house.
A visual masterpiece in stunning black and white, based on the mythology of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala and spoken in a 17th-century Malayalam dialect. Indian folk horror Bramayugam (translation: The Age of Madness) has clearly taken notes from the work of Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse, The VVitch), but takes place in the sweltering jungles of the Malabar Coast. In the sinister mansion – its creaking floors and hidden corridors reminiscent of Gothic tales – tension slowly builds until it reaches a frightening climax. South Indian superstar Mammootty gives a terrifying performance as the cruel lord of the manor.
Director Rahul Sadasivan will be joining us for a Q&A after the screening on 1 November.
