Del Toro’s magical-realist masterpiece celebrates its’ 20th birthday with an astounding new 4K restoration.
Spain, 1944. 10-year-old Ofelia and her mother move to northern Spain to join Ofelia’s new stepfather Captain Vidal. Vidal, a falangist Captain in the Armed Police Corps, is hunting down anti-fascist fighters. Soon, Ofelia starts escaping her harsh reality in a self-imagined fairytale world.
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece, we’re screening the brand-new 4K restoration that premièred at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Pan’s Labyrinth is generally considered a true Magical Realist highlight, showing a parallel magical universe next to the harsh reality of fascism. Visually stunning, the film is set in Spain under Franco’s rule (1939 – 1975) but was clearly also inspired by the rise of fascism in Latin-America and every other autocratic and authoritarian regime in the world. This makes Pan’s Labyrinth chillingly relevant, even today.
