Today’s menu
48 Hour Film Project
Today at 16:30 and 19:00 in LAB111
The participants of the annual Imagine x 48 Hours Film Project started on Friday 17 October at 18:00, shouting ‘It’s a wrap!’ on Sunday 19 at 19:30. Two days of toiling on a horror, SF, fantasy or, well, just plain weird short film. The results will be shown on the big screen today at 16:30 and at 19:00. Afterwards, at 21:30, the prize winners will be announced during the Awards Show. Exciting.
OBEX with Q&A
Today at 19:00 in Filmhallen
It’s 1987. Hermit Conor must rescue his dog Sandy from a demonic figure who has kidnapped her and brought her into an old-school computer game. Obex, an ode to the digital stone age and lo-fi special effects, was inspired by claustrophobia classics Eraserhead and The Shining, according to director Albert Birney – who will be present for a Q&A after today’s 7PM screening. A labour of love, this future cult classic in retro black and white. Also showing on 7 November, but without the director.
VERS x Imagine: A Conversation with Ben Wheatley
Tonight at 20:00 in LAB111 (Kapelzaal)
Hey, Ben Wheatley is still around! Tonight at 20:00, he will be talking to VERS, the platform for new makers in film, television and XR. In LAB111’s intimate Kapelzaal, Wheatley will dive into his wondrous oeuvre, which jumps back and forth between arthouse-horror and mainstream-everything. There’s plenty of room for questions, and drinks afterwards.
Films of the day
With Bedevil (tonight at 19:15), our theme programme Reversing the Gaze will be travelling to Australia. In 1993, director Tracy Moffatt, of Aboriginal and Irish descent, made a ghost story triptych inspired by her ancestry. She wanted to create a hybrid reflecting the mix of cultures in Australia. The film didn’t do well upon its release, but its reputation grew over the years. There’s a second screening on 7 November.
New Group is one of no less than fourteen (!) Japanese titles in this year’s programme. A high-school horror in which the students behave in a creepily conformist manner – apart from the two rebellious main characters, that is. Winner of a Special Jury Mention at the Fantasia International Film Festival 2025. Tonight at 21:30, also on 6 November.
Fuck My Son! (today at 21:30, and on 7 November) certainly deserves the prize for the most tasteless title of Imagine 2025. The film itself – about an elderly mother who forces a kidnapped woman to, indeed, have sex with her monstrous son – also fits the bill. You’ve been warned.
Our team tips for today and beyond
Honey Bunch
Kiko, Programmer: ‘A tale of romance rooted in devotion. This film will put your own relationships in perspective and show you what true love is underneath its very mysterious plot. I’d love to say more but the less you know, the more delicious it will be.’
3 and 6 November
Kinki
Rabia, Head of Marketing: ‘I’m a big fan of Koji Shiraishi. His found-footage folk horror got me hooked since Cult, Occult, and then Noroi. I love puzzles and he gives you all the pieces, but in a confusing order. In Kinki you can expect another absurd mix of horror and mystery.’
4 and 7 November
