Happy holidays dearest weirdos! Let’s eat (a lot) and watch (even more). Here are our cinema and streaming recommendations for the holidays and the month of January. Because the darkest days are perfect for dark materials.

Need something to look forward to at the end of winter? We’re gearing up for Club Imagine from February 27th – March 1st. A weekend full of genre fun in LAB111!

The Imagine team’s favourite Christmas films

We don’t mind watching these every year (again, and again, and again).

  • Chris (Artistic Director): The Thing (SkyShowtime, Pathé Thuis) – The snowiest, weirdest holiday film of all!
  • Evrim (Programmer): 3615 code Père Noël (Amazon Prime) – Home Alone, but make it extra creepy.
  • Kiko (Programmer): Krampus (Prime, SkyShowtime) – Christmas, Germanic-style. It’s a blast!
  • Inez (Programmer): Tokyo Godfathers (Apple TV+, Prime) – Even Satoshi Kon has a bit of Christmas spirit.
  • Elina (Programmer): The Knives Out trilogy (Netflix en Prime) – Wonderful whodunnits for some extra winter warmth. Part three, Wake Up Dead Man, is now also on Netflix!
  • Lauren (Web Editor): Batman Returns (HBO) – It’s always grim in Gotham. Be sure to put on The Penguin straight after.

Our cinema tips for December and January

This winter’s best genre features on the big screen.

  • Silent Night, Deadly Night – a new Christmas killer courtesy of the creators of Terrifier 2 and 3 (so get ready).
  • If I Had Legs I’d Kick You – the ultimate feel-bad-film of 2025, with Rose Byrne als a mom on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
  • Angel’s Egg – Mamuro Oshii’s mysterious anime classic, now in glorious 4K.
  • Urchin (from 25/12) – Harris Dickinson’s magical debut. Also screened at Imagine ’25!
  • Anaconda (from 25/12) – Paul Rudd and Jack Black take on J-Lo and Ice Cube’s 90s cult flop/hit (or do they?). Proof that you’re better off remaking semi-crappy films than good ones.
  • Little Amélie or the Character of Rain (from 25/12) – beautiful Japanese-French animation, to warm your cold cold heart.
  • 28 Years Later: Part 2 – The Bone Temple (from 15/1) – part two of Danny Boyle’s flamboyant comeback. Includes more blood-drenched Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell as a silly-looking cult guru. Fun!
  • Dead of Winter (from 15/1) – Dame Emma Thompson toting a gun in an icy thriller?? We’re so game!
  • Dust Bunny (from 29/1) – Mads Mikkelsen once again proves he can do no wrong (see: The Last Viking), helping out a girl who wants to catch the monster under her bed.
  • Send Help (from 29/1) – Six words: Sam Raimi. Deserted island. Can’t wait.

Merry Xmas, see you in 2026!
