At his great-grandfather’s deathbed, Francis Wayland Thurston receives a mysterious research document about a cult that worships the ancient god Cthulhu. Intrigued, Thurston sets off on his own quest, which drives him to the brink of madness. A screening with live music by Kevin Toma!
The Call of Cthulhu (2005) is a silent film adaption of one of Lovecraft’s best-known tales. Long considered impossible to bring to the screen, the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society – founded in the 1986 by a group of actors from Boulder, Colorado – managed to create a film that stays true to the spirit of the story. The Call of Cthulhu was released in 2005 but its use of Mythoscope, a blend of vintage and modern film techniques and stop-motion, makes it feel like a 1920’s classic. A rare tribute that strikes all the right chords.
The musical accompaniment was composed especially for Imagine and will be performed by composer, scholar and writer Kevin Toma (Sittard, 1974). Toma has been creating contemporary music for silent films for over three decades, performing at IFFR, Film Fest Gent, IDFA, Lowlands and the Dutch Mountain Film Festival, to name a few. At Imagine Fantastic Film Festival 2018, he composed an exclusive new score for James Whale’s Frankenstein (1931).
