Our H.P. Lovecraft-inspired theme programme A Tentacular Touch wouldn’t be complete without Re-Animator, especially as this cult classic marks its 40th (!) anniversary this year. Director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs as the blunt and neurotic Herbert West and Barbara Crampton in her breakout role as the ultimate scream queen created true eighties magic. Gordon based his screenplay on Lovecraft’s novella Herbert West, Re-Animator, a Frankenstein parody. This campy splatterfest - with an autopsy scene that made Gordon himself feel queasy and a score that sounds suspiciously like Psycho - is still an absolute cult-horror highlight.
