It’s 1999. Sixteen-year-old Maz is convinced that her dad, who was working on a secret army project, didn't die but was abducted by aliens from their sleepy Welsh town. Obsessed with the truth, Maz asks her sceptical best friend and a local UFO expert for help.
For his debut feature, director Simon Ryninks taps into West Wales’s reputation as a UFO sighting hot spot. Charming coming-of-age sci-fi Out There is set in the largely analogue world of 1999, supported by the intimate setting of a sleepy coastal town. Maz and her best friend Elis are already outsiders in their community, and teaming up with ufologist and conspiracy theorist Bryn alienates them even further. Maz’s determination, fuelled by big dreams and teenage angst, drives the film, while the excellent Welsh cast grounds this heartfelt story of grief and self-acceptation.
