No Rest for the Wicked is based on a 19th-century short story by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, an early champion of gay rights. A gorgeous Gothic folk horror in the vein of Robert Eggers, set in a remote fishing community where strangers are mistrusted, superstition rules and the unforgiving landscape poses a constant threat. The stunning cinematography makes you feel like a true Faroe Islander in a Viking fairy tale. Danish actor Pilou Asbæk (Borgen) plays the alluring stranger, while newcomer Egor Venned, who is actually from the islands, impresses as a young man whose suppressed queer desires are on the verge of exploding.
