Prepare for a film that embodies our festival motto 100%. The Wig is a wonderfully weird tale about cinema, cults and the power of hair.
Director Emiliano Rocha Minter, who debuted at IFFR with his transgressive body horror We Are the Flesh in 2016, returns with a caustic comedy that chews up the world of cinema and spits it out transformed. It’s like a Mexican Mulholland Drive, with Buñuel watching from above.
Silvestre Lorna is a struggling filmmaker in pursuit of funding for his magnum opus: an epic three-hour biopic of Benito Juárez, one of the most renowned presidents in the history of Mexico. For his film, Lorna travels to what can only be described as a creative harem – a surreal mansion where he encounters cardboard dandies, wild girls and devotees of the god of cinema, and receives the most peculiar gift: a 19th century blonde wig that fits him perfectly. From the moment Lorna puts it on, we venture down the rabbit hole with him.
Accompanying short: The Flesh Dress
An elderly fashion designer makes his wife work on his dresses until her death. But she returns to him, younger, in her old wedding gown. This gorgeous stop-motion deals with the terror of growing older, the grief of loss and the pain of letting go.
