A family is haunted by ghosts from a dark past in this magical-realist political horror film.
Thirty years after the Guatemalan civil war and genocide, a former army commander is convicted for his participation but escapes sentencing. He withdraws with his family in their luxurious home. But when Alma, a mysterious Indigenous servant, arrives, the atrocities of the past begin to haunt them.
La Lllorona is the final chapter of director Jayro Bustamante’s trilogy about the violent history of his home country of Guatamala. After the mistreatment of the Maya’s (Ixcanul) and the discrimination of homosexuals (Temblores), Bustamante has decided to focus on the genocide of the Indigenous population during the 1980s civil war. He makes use of genres like magical-realism and horror to denounce the atrocities through the mythical figure of ‘La Llorona’, the avenging mother. This is the first cinema screening of the film in the Netherlands.
