Marion Cotillard shines in a thriller about love, family and breaking a cycle of violence.

Jeanne is trying to build a new life in the Spanish countryside with Daniel, who has no clue of her past. When her six-year-old godson Mateo disappears, all eyes turn to Jeanne, who flees to the French community she grew up in. Convinced of her innocence, Daniel sets out to find her.

Director Guillaume Canet wrote Karma especially for Marion Cotillard, whom he had directed four times before. The stifling intensity of Cotillard’s performance drives this religious psychological thriller, and the complexity of her character is evident from the very first scene: madly in love with Daniel and doting on Mateo, yet also an alcoholic, traumatised by her past. When she returns to France, that past comes crashing back. Canet builds the film layer by layer, while Benoît Debie’s intimate cinematography heightens the already claustrophobic atmosphere. A dark story about love, family and breaking a cycle of emotional violence.
