Syrian refugees are met with suspicion in a Lebanese village holding a dark secret.

Syrian deserter Tarek starts building in a village in Lebanon, but soon senses the villagers’ hostility, fuelled by resentment from the Syrian occupation of Lebanon in the 1990s. As tensions escalate, he also becomes haunted by the ghost of a woman, murdered under the occupation.

The Syrian occupation of Lebanon in the 1990s is relatively unknown in the West, but it has left deep scars in the region. The ghosts of the past still haunt the present-day relationship between the Syrians and the Lebanese, to the point that it’s nearly impossible for both communities to live together. Lebanese director Nadim Tabet uses horror elements to tell this complex story, heading slowly but steadily towards a violent finale. On the way, he reflects on themes like xenophobia, exclusion and intolerance. An urgent film.

On 1 November, the director will be present for a Q&A after the screening.
