For his 12th feature, Indonesian genre maestro Joko Anwar shifts from his usual dark, supernatural ghost stories to a brightly-lit prison where every gruesome scene is shown in gloriously gory detail. Anwar balances these grisly moments with slapstick comedy, spontaneous dance-offs, dynamic fistfights, and sudden bouts of prayer. The tone is much lighter than he’s known for, and the comedy is infectious and disarming. With his typical visual flair and sharp writing, Anwar depicts the prison as a microcosmos of society, criticising corruption, environmental destruction, and class differences. A political undercurrent wrapped in hugely entertaining, genre-bending chaos.
