Detective Mirjana travels to eastern Serbia to find a missing girl. In the villages she encounters an old story of something that takes a human form and chooses a lover, returning night after night until the world outside no longer matters. The further Mirjana travels, the less her logic holds.
After premiering his debut Panama at Cannes in 2015, director Pavle Vučković returns with his third feature, visualising an eastern Serbian myth at fever pace. Frost moves by sensation rather than plot, steeped in desire, detachment, fear and superstition. The supernatural and the procedural bleed into one another, like a Scandinavian crime investigation shot with the sensual patience of Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Shot in monestaries along the Danube, the film’s real focus is Mirjana, her trauma and her appetite kept frozen – a uniquely structured dragon-slayer story with a woman in the hero’s armour.
