An adoptive mother’s grief turns into something primal and violent in this stylish and provocative horror.
Wealthy art collector Irene has adopted a baby through a surrogate arrangement. When a sudden tragedy shatters Irene’s world, her grief is so deep that primal, violent instincts begin to guide her. When her path crosses that of a trafficker of exotic predators, a morbid bond is forged.
Andre Corsini’s amazing first feature is firmly rooted in the provocative and stylish tradition of 70s and 80s Italian horror, with its lavish design, soaring emotions and flashes of extreme violence. Carolyn Bracken (recently seen in Oddity) is excellent as a new mother whose grief slowly turns into animalistic, predatory behaviour, while the film’s tragic violence is underpinned by a gorgeous score courtesy of legendary composer Pino Donaggio. First titled Beasts of Prey, Ferine was part of Imagine’s talent programme European Genre Forum in 2021.
