Roger Corman's viciously fun satire about a fascist America where running people over serves as entertainment.
In the distant sounding year of 2000, American democracy has all but collapsed and the Transcontinental Road Race has taken its place. Masked celebrity drivers race coast to coast, upping their score with every pedestrian they kill. Bonus points for kids and old people!
Roger Corman recruited Paul Bartel to direct Death Race 2000 on a shoestring budget, but what came out the other end is much sharper than either of them probably intended. A chrome-masked David Carradine plays reigning TRR champion Frankenstein menacingly and deadpan, while a pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone steals every scene he's in as the unhinged Machine Gun Joe Viterbo. Fifty years on, Corman’s jokes about state violence dressed up as entertainment are just as timely – and a bit too real.
The film will be introduced by Julie Corman.
