Intimate documentary following a motley crew of Nigerian genre filmmakers and their difficult rise to fame.
In the Nigerian town of Kaduna, a group of siblings and friends get together and start making scifi- and superhero films on their mobile phones. They gain a following on YouTube, and when JJ Abrams donates a crate of professional equipment, their lives change dramatically.
New Zealand filmmaker Pietra Brettkelly starts following the group, called ‘The Critics’, when they’re already hugely popular on YouTube. Abrams’s gift offers them the opportunity to go bigger and move from Kaduna (nicknamed ‘The Crocodile City’) to the capital, Abuja. But the move, coupled with confrontations with corruption and police brutality, leads to tension within the group. Intimately shot, with lots of footage from The Critics’ own films, Crocodile shows the difficult rise of a motley crew of passionate genre fans, and their desire to make films at all costs.
