Writer-director Yusuke Iwasaki’s feature length debut, which won him the FIPRESCI award in Berlin, was based on his own observations in his father’s store. AnyMart combines social satire with existential horror to address the harm caused by capitalism, consumerism and alienation. Forced conformity and broken dreams lead to unbearable frustration, suicidal tendencies, and bloodlust. Mixing dry humour with moments of gruesome violence, Iwasaki paints a vivid picture of Japanese working culture.
