Lovecraftian and ethereal fantasy animation classic. Hand-drawn and breathtaking, especially in 4K.
In a flooded city, a young girl nurses an egg that she believes belongs to an angel. At the same time, an armed boy searches for the bird he dreamt about. A fragile friendship develops, until a violent outburst changes everything.
After Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor, Mamoru Oshii teamed up with renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano to create Angel’s Egg (1985), a stunning, hand-drawn allegory which matches Oshii’s philosophic and religious themes with Amano’s visual style. The world they came up with feels ancient and full of decay. A world of spirits, where new beginnings softly stir. Minimal dialogue and alienating, dystopian landscapes create an extraordinary and at times ethereal film, perfectly capturing a sense of uncertainty and solitude.
On 4 November, Angel’s Egg will be presented in collaboration with Kaboom Animation Festival, with an introduction by Artistic Director Aneta Ozorek.
