Ambitious and stunningly designed sci-fi thriller combines personal obsessions with larger life issues.
In the Europe of 2041, all citizens – aided by technology – have the right to an extra life after a violent death. After a double murder, an ambitious detective discovers that only one of the two is to receive a new life. She sets out to investigate what’s really going on.
In his debut feature film, director Robert Hloz cleverly interweaves futuristic technology with existing institutes and practices to create a plausible futuristic society. The option of an extra life raises questions about its worth, and if murder even exists if the victim gets a second chance anyway. Surrounding these issues is a stunning feat of world-building: the design is a gorgeous mix of alienating architecture and far-advanced technology. Within that framework, the lonely detective wonders if all this tech really enables us to right the wrongs of our past.
