A pregnant woman sees her country house turn against her in a stylish horror mystery, shot in one take.
While her husband Viktor is working in the city, heavily pregnant Maria inspects the country house they want to operate as a bed & breakfast. As dusk sets in, the beautiful house turns against its owner. When Maria seeks help from her father-in-law, she makes a staggering discovery.
Largely filmed in one uninterrupted take, director Thomas Sieben draws the viewer deep into Maria’s world. While she appears to increasingly lose her grip on her surroundings, the viewer becomes more and more disoriented as well. Meanwhile, Sieben keeps a tight enough hold of the reigns that we can join Maria step by step towards the reveal that’s waiting for her. The modern country house is a fourth character, weighing heavily on the events with the weight of its history. Home Sweet Home – Where Evil Lives is yet more proof that German genre film is alive and kicking.
