Junta Yamaguchi’s second feature is, just like his firstborn Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2020), another trippy time paradox comedy that will get your brain deliciously twisted. Along with his usual collaborator, screenwriter Makoto Ueda, he creates a masterful strange loop filled with colourful and fully developed characters, each with their own stories. River is whimsical and touching, too. It manages, in 43 single take scenes of 2 minutes each, to embark us on a playful puzzle that’s 43 times repetitive yet ever changing.
