Investigation into murdered sex workers becomes a journey into the heart of darkness of religious zealotry and misogyny.

Hanaei is a builder and veteran of the Iran-Iraq war. At night, he looks for victims among the prostitutes of Mashhad and suffocates them. After another dumped body is found, journalist Rahimi starts to investigate the murders. With little outside help, her only choice is to risk her own life.

Ali Abbasi (Shelley, Imagine 2016) based his film on the true story of the real Hanaei, nicknamed the ‘Spider Killer’, who killed sixteen sex workers in 2001. Holy Spider is a journey into the heart of darkness of religious zealotry and misogyny. The film does not thrive on its mystery, which gets resolved quickly, but on a continuous sense of danger. Zar Amir-Ebrahimi is magnificent as the fearless, reckless Rahimi, fighting for justice in a patriarchal society that offers her very few options. The role won her the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
