Dit Romeinenspektakel werd geregisseerd door de Brit Neil Marshall, die we kennen als maker van de claustrofobische horrorthriller The Descent en de post-apocalyptische actiefilm Doomsday (AFFF 2008). Ook Centurion, ofschoon gebaseerd op historische gebeurtenissen, draagt een onmiskenbaar Marshall-stempel. De strijd tussen Picten en Romeinen ontpopt zich al snel als een mensenjacht en een afvalrace met horror-achtige trekjes. Lichamen worden doorboord, hoofden afgehakt en zelfs wolven mengen zich in het strijdgewoel. Marshall wist overigens een opmerkelijk sterke cast voor zijn film bij elkaar te brengen. Rijzende ster Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds), Dominic West (300), Bondgirl Olga Kurylenko en de Deen Ulrich Thomsen (Adam's Apples) gingen voor hun regisseur door het vuur, soms zelfs letterlijk.

117 BC. On the outer borders of the Roman Empire, in what is now Scotland, the original inhabitants, the Picts, are in fierce combat with their invaders. A tough job because the mighty Ninth Legion, led by Tutus Virilus (what's in a name) are a force to be reckoned with. In his hunt for the Pict leader, Virilus enlists the aid of a native warrior woman who turns out to be double-crossing him. A massive bloodbath seems unavoidable.
