Alle communicatiemiddelen zijn uitgevallen. Tv's, telefoons en computers werken niet meer. De samenleving komt tot stilstand. Mensen zijn ineens weer aangewezen op personen en zaken die zich recht voor hun neus bevinden. Van de drie broers die de hoofdpersonen van de film vormen kan er een niet meer slapen. Een tweede broer raakt verwikkeld in een lusteloze relatie. Rond de derde broer spelen zich de meest dramatische gebeurtenissen af.
Het Hongaarse Transmission toont met simpele middelen een wereld die tot een staat van lethargie is vervallen. De mensen behelpen zich met wat er is; overdag probeert men voedsel, water en stroom te bemachtigen, 's avonds zit men in spaarzaam verlichte ruimtes bij elkaar. Dan komt aan het licht dat het ook met de gewone mens-tot-menscommunicatie droevig gesteld is. Dit vervreemdende, soms droogkomische portret van een lamgeslagen gemeenschap werd opgenomen in een kustplaatsje waar alle huizen opvallend hoekige contouren hebben. Bijna ieder shot is een geometrisch kunstwerkje, opgebouwd uit strakke lijnen en diepe schaduwpartijen. Nog even en voor de mens is in dit abstracte universum geen plaats meer.

All means of communication have broken down. TV's, telephones and computers no longer work. Society has come to a standstill, and once again people have to depend on other people and the things that are right in front of them. Of the three brothers who are the protagonists in this film, one can't sleep anymore and another gets stuck in a listless relationship. But the most dramatic events happen to the third brother.
With simple means, Hungarian Transmission shows us a world which has succumbed to a state of lethargy. People make do with what's available. In the daytime they try to find food, water and electricity, at night they huddle together in scarcely lit rooms. That's when they discover that the people-to-people communication isn't all that great either. This alienating, at times dryly comical portrait of a society brought to a halt, was filmed in a seaside town where all houses have a distinctly angular outline. Almost every shot is a geometrical work of art, created by straight lines and deep shadows. It won't be long before there is no more room for human beings in this abstract universe.
