De aan lager wal geraakte DJ Grant Mazzy (Stephen McHattie) heeft een baantje gevonden bij een kleine radiozender in het Canadese stadje Pontypool. Vanuit de studio in een leegstaand kerkje verzorgt hij dagelijks zijn ochtendprogramma. Dit lijkt een dag als alle andere, tot berichten binnensijpelen over mensen die gek zijn geworden, anderen aanvallen en vreemde taal uitslaan. Mazzy en zijn staf proberen de chaotische gebeurtenissen te volgen en erover te berichten. Maar hoe lang is de radiostudio veilig?
Is Pontypool een zombiefilm? Je zou het aan de hand van bovenstaande synopsis wel denken. Maar deze inventieve en intelligente horrorfilm, gebaseerd op de roman Pontypool Changes Everything van Tony Burgess (die ook het scenario schreef), steunt op een origineel concept waarover we niet te veel willen verklappen. Laten we zeggen dat de vraag waarmee Mazzy zijn openingsmonoloog besluit - "What does it mean?" - het verschil zal maken tussen leven en dood. Pontypool speelt zich grotendeels af in het radiostation en vrijwel alle actie krijgen we alleen te horen. Dat werkt. Vooral doordat McHattie, in de rol van zijn carrière, zijn ongeloof en afgrijzen met succes op de kijker projecteert. Een instant genreklassieker.

DJ Grant Mazzy, whose life is on the rocks, finds a job with a small radio station in the Canadian town of Pontypool. He hosts a daily morning show from a studio in an abandoned little church. This day starts out like any other day, but then reports start to come in about people going mad, attacking others and speaking gibberish. Mazzy and his staff try to keep track of the chaos and report on it, but how long are they safe in the radio studio?
