Een groepje vrienden gaat op weg naar Jakarta om twee van hen, een koppel inclusief hoogzwangere vrouw, op het vliegtuig te zetten. Maar dan slaat het noodlot toe in de gedaante van een liftster. Ze zetten de vrouw thuis af en gaan dan dom genoeg op haar uitnodiging in, om nog even kennis te maken met haar moeder, alvorens verder te reizen. Eenmaal binnen is er geen weg meer terug.
Je zou dit de Indonesische variant van martelhorror kunnen noemen, ware het niet dat de regisseurs, beter bekend als The Mo Brothers, het harde sadisme en cynisme van hun Amerikaanse collega's inruilen tegen een royale portie absurditeit. Misschien dat Macabre het gat vult tussen The Texas Chainsaw Massacre en de nieuwe Japanse splattergolf: hilarischer dan het Amerikaanse voorbeeld, maar serieuzer dan de groteske bloedbaden van de Japanners. Grote attractie is trouwens de markante actrice Shareefa Daanish die de moeder speelt; een huiveringwekkende verschijning die met ijzige kalmte haar demonische plannetjes uitvoert en zelfs een paar woordjes Nederlands spreekt in de film. A group of friends travel to Jakarta to take two of them, a couple including a highly pregnant woman, to the airport. But then fate strikes in the shape of a female hitchhiker. They drop the woman off at her home and foolishly accept her invitation to come meet her mother before travelling on. Once inside, there is no way back.
You could call this an Indonesian variation on torture horror, if it weren't for the fact that the directors, better known as The Mo Brothers, swap the cruel sadism and cynicism of their American colleagues for a generous dose of absurdity. You could also say Macabre fills the gap between The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the new wave of Japanese splatter: funnier than the American classic, but more serious than the grotesque bloodbaths of the Japanese. Distinctive actress Shareefa Daanish, who plays the mother, is the main attraction; a frightening figure who executes her demonic plans with an icy composure.
